Child Student Visa Changes: What They Mean — and How Kitt McArthur Can Help
From 29 May 2025, the Home Office is introducing major safeguarding reforms to the Child Student Visa route, impacting UK independent schools and all sponsored students aged 4–17. These rules tighten oversight of boarding, care, and guardianship arrangements, especially outside of school term time.
What’s Changing
Students must now live in one of six specific UK living arrangements, including updated categories for weekly and flexi boarders.
A new role — the ‘Nominated Guardian’ — is formally defined and must:
- Be British or settled in the UK
- Submit a Letter of Undertaking confirming care responsibilities
- Pass safeguarding checks (no relevant criminal convictions)
Schools must verify and record living arrangements and travel plans in greater detail than before.
